Computational Biology Software Project Leader / Assistant Professor or Research Associate

Postdoctoral and scientific programmer positions are also available (see bottom of the ad).

The E-Cell Project is seeking an enthusiastic candidate for a software project leader position. Depending on experience, the successful candidate will be appointed at the Assistant Professor (no-teaching duties) or Research Associate position at Institute for Advanced Biosciences, Keio University.

The E-Cell Project (http://www.e-cell.org) is one of the leading scientific initiatives in computational systems and cell biology, with a clear focus on technological development toward modeling, simulation, and analysis of biological phenomena at the molecular level. Some of the core activities of the project include development of the software platform, called E-Cell System (http://ecell.sf.net), simulation algorithms, modeling theories, mathematical analysis techniques, and integration with analytical methods including metabolomics and proteomics. The project is a growing enterprise supported by multiple multi-million USD-class funding sources, and is currently ongoing in three different locations: The Institute for Advanced Biosciences, Keio University (Tsuruoka and Fujisawa, Japan), Mitsubishi Space Software Co., Ltd. (Amagasaki, Japan), and The Molecular Sciences Institute (Berkeley, USA).

Successful candidates are expected to be based at project headquarters in Tsuruoka, Japan and will enjoy active interactions with scientists and engineers in other parts of the project both in Japan and in the USA.

This is an excellent opportunity for an Open Source-minded individual who is eager to get his/her scientific and software proficiency into full play.

Job description

Your principal responsibility will be to lead the development of E-Cell System. You will be responsible for implementing the decisions about the direction of software development as taken by the E-Cell Project Steering Committee, of which you will be a member. You will also be responsible to optimize the projects greater reach by bridging the internal development of the project with the contributions from a community of users and volunteer developers spread throughout the world. This is not purely a management position and the selected candidate will be expected to exhibit prominent leadership as a software architect and as a lead programmer. Therefore, demonstrated and advanced abilities in software architecture, modern C++, and Python are required. While a knowledge of the Japanese language is not necessary, outstanding English communication skills (oral/written) for project management are essential. A doctoral degree in computer, physical or biological sciences would be highly desirable.

The contract will be renewable every year for up to 3-5 years depending on the type of the position. Salary will be based on the current standards at Keio University and/or the funding source's rules. Japan has one of the best health insurance systems.
